While many people are familiar with black and green tea, they have just a general idea about red Rooibos tea. Also known as Red tea, Bush tea and Redbush tea, Rooibos tea is quickly becoming a popular option for tea connoisseurs by virtue of brilliantly red color, wonderful taste and remarkable health benefits. Original Rooibos tea has been used in Southern Africa for generations and is now consumed in many countries around the Globe.
So, what is African Rooibos tea? In fact, Rooibos tea is a tea made from the leaves of the rooibos bush that is natural herbal plant found in a small area in South Africa, the Cederberg Mountains. Actually, red Rooibos tea remained virtually unknown for centuries while being the traditional drink of the Khoisans, a tribe of South African Bushmen, used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. In 1772, Swedish botanist Carl Humberg rediscovered this herbal drink and a century later, Benjamin Ginsberg, a Russian immigrant, began offering it as an herbal substitute to tea and coffee.
As a rule, African Rooibos tea is harvested during the summer. Most of the tea is picked manually. At this stage the leaves are actually green but under the influence of pure mineral water, fresh mountain air and the hot African sun the plant transforms from bright green to deep mahogany red. Now this is the traditional method of producing original Rooibos tea, that’s why it also came to be called "red bush" tea, being appreciated with health-conscious consumers throughout the world.
Actually, red Rooibos tea has endless health benefits. While containing no colors, caffeine, additives or preservatives, original Rooibos tea is considered to be great help in health problems such as insomnia, irritability, headaches, nervous tension and hypertension. Moreover, African Rooibos tea is an excellent beverage for active people, including children as it has been proven to contain vitamins and minerals such as zinc, copper, calcium, manganese, magnesium, potassium, etc.
African Rooibos tea is as easy to prepare as an ordinary cup of tea and can be enjoyed hot or cold. As original Rooibos tea is naturally sweet, you can enjoy it without sugar and honey. Once you experience the taste of red Rooibos tea, you never want to be without this delicious elixir and well-being it provides.
